LEPTOSPIROSIS (Weil's,canicola,seven-day fever)
Symptoms: low fever for several days, off feed,
listlessness and then painful-looking eyes, closing
the eyes, sensitivity to light, discharge, and
general eye discomfort. If untreated it can lead to
blindness, abortion in mares, and death.
Causes: Most usually through eating hay and feed stuffs
contaminated by infected mice, rat or deer urine or
droppings. Low immune system function so infection is
not fought off naturally.
Avoidance: Store all feed stuffs in secure vermim proof
containers, and ensure the horses' immune system is at
optimum levels.
Treatment: Your vet will use steroids, antibiotics, medication
to dilate the eyes and relieve pain. Keep the affected horse
in a dark environment, wearing a fly mask and keep dust levels
as low as possible. Ensure all feed stuffs offered are quite
free from the contaminants stated above.
