Causes:
Inflammation of the lymph vessels normally happens through infection getting
into the body possbily via a cut or abrasion. Damaged lymph vessels can no
longer drain lymph fluid from affected areas which also means that the body
cannot fight infection as well as it can with a healthy lymph system.
Lymph vessels are
similar to blood vessels (arteries and veins) but instead of blood, a
watery lymph fluid flows through them. Lymph is massaged along by the
action of muscle and drains excessive tissue from all over the body. During
this process toxins are removed from damaged areas. After removal the fluid
is filtered through lymph nodes which have a crucial role in fighting
infection. An allergic reaction to feed stuffs and/or drugs can be a cause
and diets high in protein can aggravate the condition.
Signs:
Often
swelling, which can be twice or three times normal size, occurs in a hind
limb and can become permanent. An injury to the affected limb can often be
traced and yellow fluid may seep from the skin causing a lot of pain and loss
of proper movement. Infection may cause the body temperature to rise.
Treatment:
This is
geared towards controlling any infection with antibiotics and releiving pain
so that gentle exercise may be undertaken in order to re-establish the vital
massage the lymph system needs to work properly. The use of modern products
to aid the detoxification process and electrolytes to help balance the system
are also indicated. The reduction of high protein diets is to be encouraged
replacing them with more good quality hay, alfalfa and roughage possibly
using oils instead of grain based feeds (see Azoturia and Dr Beth Valentine's
observations). Unfortunately the condition is very likely to recurr unless
care with the diet and vigilance over even the smallest cut or abrasion to
ensure no infection enters the system is taken.
